Senior Dog Care: Because Old Age is Just a Number (But a Pretty Big One!)

Today, let’s dive into a topic that’s close to my heart: caring for senior dogs. Because let’s face it, old age might slow them down, but it certainly does not dim their sparkles!

As a seasoned pets’ owner, I have indeed seen my fair share of senior pups in need of a little extra TLC. I, too had a humbling time taking care of my beloved doggo, whom I had the privilege taking care of since she was a 7 weeks pup until she gained her wings at 17 in 2021. So, grab a cup of coffee (or a treat for your furry companion) and let’s talk about how to make the golden years truly golden for your beloved four-legged friends.

Understanding Your Senior Dog’s Needs

First things first, patience. It is important to recognize that our aging furry pals have unique needs that require special attention. From joint pain to dental issues and everything in between, keeping a close eye on your senior dog’s health is key to ensuring they live their best life in their later years.

Healthy Habits for Happy Golden Oldies

Regular vet check-ups are a must, along with a diet tailored to their changing nutritional needs. Keeping them clean is also a vital aspect of senior care. Invest in pee pads and diapers whenever needed. There are also more affordable alternatives such as reusable and washable pads.

Engaging Their Minds and Bodies

I cannot point it out enough how keeping the senior dog’s mind sharp is just as important as keeping their body healthy. Puzzle toys, interactive games, and even some low-key training sessions can help stave off cognitive decline and keep them feeling spry well into their golden years. It is not a torture to allow our dogs work a little bit more for their treats.

Let’s not forget about exercise – while they might not be up for chasing lizards like they used to, a gentle stroll around the block can work wonders for both their physical and mental well-being. A stroller or a carrier is a useful addition at this point.

Navigating the Emotional Rollercoaster

Of course, caring for a senior dog is not just about physical health – it is mainly about navigating the emotional ups and downs that come with aging. From the inevitable goodbyes to cherishing every moment you have together, it is all part of the journey. So, embrace the laughter, shed a tear when necessary, and above all, cherish the bond you share with your furry companion.

When the Time Comes

I believe in taking time to grieve and mind you, everyone grieves differently. I also strongly believe that whatever way your senior companions gained their wings, know that you have done your best. At that point, you had that amount of time, knowledge, resources and you gave it your best shot. Then, that is it. Even if right now you had more time, more knowledge and more resources that you think you could do better for your pet, but at that point, you did not and there is no other way around it.

So, yeah, take the time to cry and wail all you want to. Take the time off, disappear if you want to. You will come back stronger and people like you, have a lot of love to give. Grieve, as I heard it, is a lot a lot of love with nowhere to go. Trust me, there are many others who need the love that YOU can give, so do not stop here.

Here is to our wise old pups and the joy they bring into our lives each and every day.
